Leader Decisions:
|
The most important leader decision is length. Too short and you'll spook fish, too long and you're fly won't swing deep. These are the things you'll have to balance when choosing your leader. As a rule of thumb, a MT leader should be between 2-6 feet, and generally in the 3-4 foot range for most fishing conditions. There is really no reason to use a leader longer than 5 or 6 feet when swinging on a tip or head. The longer the leader, the higher your fly will swing in relationship to the tip of the fly line, so a longer leader is counter productive. If you're fishing to spooky fish in clear shallow water and feel that your leader or line may be spooking the fish, you'll probably be better off switching to a floating line and long leader (but that's another article).
