Patterns:
Now comes the fun part, pattern selection. There are a couple schools of thought on this: aggression, food, and non-typical.

Aggression is perhaps the best suited for kings. The thought is if you run a streamer/attractor pattern in front of a king enough times he/she's going to hit it eventually. Hey, it works... Patterns for this could include most speys, streamers, baitfish, and other large gaudy patterns like tube flies. One pattern in specific that worked for me recently is a Brown Trout Candy tied in Yellow.

Food can be a very productive temptation to kings at times as well. Although for the most part they don't eat after entering a river system, food style patterns can and do regularly hook fish. Flies such as eggs, and nymphs such as stones, caddis and hex grace the boxes of most fishermen. Now we can get back into the discussion of do kings "eat" or not, but once again let's just agree that they do take food style patterns, albeit in earnest or lined they do work.

Non-typical is perhaps the most fun to play with, and does often work when nothing else does. This style is often very productive on heavily fished systems. This class of flies would include anything that's not normally fished in the watershed. Accounts of fishermen from other parts of the country, or world, using their local patterns and catching fish can attest to the success of this style. At times, fish will refuse the best tied patterns, mostly due to the fact they've seen them a thousand times before. Run something by them that they've never seen before, and often the fish will hit out of curiosity... thought that only killed cats huh? Try experimenting with old, odd, or interesting pattern and feel free to make up a few of your own. You may be surprised how often something new works!

The most important thing to remember is to have fun, there are way too many people out there that don't treat this like a sport. It is! Enjoy the fall scenery, listen to the birds, watch the deer, enjoy the camaraderie and catch a few fish!
