Has anyone tried this line for steelhead? If so is it better then Flouro? I noticed it was a smaller Dia. line with bigger text line. Flouro seems to be aweful brittle. Just wondering if this had the advantage of flouro when it comes to visiblity underwater but as strong as Mono?

Magnathin was my go to line for years for traditional spin fishing for most species, except for weed choked lm bass. I especially liked is limp properties. In steelie fishing, I don't rely on it as much as other monos.

Diameter compared to diameter, there are lines that resist abrasion better. Maxima ultragreen "of the same diameter" will be better for drift fishing than magnathin. Florocarbon lines? They sink, which can be desirable...... and is less visible (again......comparing the same .010 diameters, dont look at the "lb." rating) but the disadvantage there is there is no stretch, and a little stretch is good in my opinion. When floro starts to get abraided, all these little hair "slivers" appear, and Im never sure if its minor wear adn tear, or if I am on the verge of the line breaking. I like the way that mono warns me....those same frays in a mono tell me immediatleyl that the line is in danger. Magna thin was like that, too.

Bottom line on Magnathin? Its not the best. To compare correctly, fish other lines of the same MM diameter and inspect them both closely when lines part or after a long day of bottom bouncing. That method of fishing very quickly will show you which line is best. Many folks have experimented with lines, and many many people rely on maxima for thier main line OR thier tippet materials. Its stood the test of time. Been around for YEARS and years.

Thanks alot.. I love Triline XL for my main line. I use a 3' leader with a nice ball bearing swivel inbetween. Then I tie my leader directly to my Plug/Fly/Spawn... Ohh I know just what you mean about that flouro problem with the fray look. I took it with me to the Manistee last fall and went 0 for 9 in the first 3hrs.. I was pissed and that was 14lbs test Berkley Vanish Flourocarbon. I'll never use that again. We went to the store and all that had was Berkley XT. So I got some 12lbs and that worked great. Over all we went 5 for 14. So I'm kinda scared about using flouro. But I did use it for steelies last spring and did fine with it..
Maxima? I've never used it. Is this the main line or is this for the leader? I'm going out tomorrow to try my luck.. Wish me the best.. LOL...
Thanks for you help fellow river rat.

The reason Magnathin is thinner is due to the fact it as the actual pound test at what it is claimed to be. Other lines are thicker due to the fact they are actually 2-3 pounds heavier breaking strength than claimed. The reason you had problems with fluoro is due to the fact you tried crap. Berkley line is not that good of a line period, especially vanish. Try something like some Sunline Super FC Sniper as a leader and you will be impressed. Another thing are you even thinking about fishing with a two hander? If you are swinging you would want something stiffer than something like Magnathin anyway to turn over larger flies.
