If you can't find anything on the market that you like, custom is the way to go. You'll have a rod geared towards you. In my case, as well as many others, I build my own rods to my own specs. Currently doing a float rod tied up with colour combos that you would never see on a factory rod.
John Collina builds some great rods. I don't own any built by him but I know several people that do and they love them. You can also try George and Tom at Angling Specialties. Randy at Natural Sports. Billy at Wilsons Fly Shop. Each has their own individual quirks and preferences and I think if you're going to be spending $500+ dollars, shopping around isn't a bad idea.
You should also try local builders in your area if there are any. You might be able to see each step of the building process and determine if you like it.
Hope this helps |

I have one of JC's rods. Looking forward to owning a few more. You will be very satisfied with the quality and workmanship.
