Since we have some friends from the UK posting on the board I was wondering if they're also into pole fishing. I was introduced to this type of fishing this summer and I had a blast using the pole. Now don't think for a minute these are your everday can poles because they're NOT. These are expensive graphite poles that are VERY LONG fairly light for their size. Mabey we can start some threads about groundbaiting, feeding, and other techniques that are used in pole fishing or even ones used by trotters across the pond.
I also have a question for anyone who owns/uses a full cage centre pin like the JW Young Rapidex. I was looking into getting a reel like this along with a cane float rod to get a collection started and to use the rod and reel.

I'm no pole angler, but some anglers over here use poles up to 20 metres in length! They are so long they've adapted a technique of actually floating the end of the pole on the water. Not my scene I'm afraid. If I want to fish that far out... i'd use a rod and reel!

I can kind of tie in the pole and centrepin thread here.
In the UK, there has been an explosion of "commercial carp waters". Basically these are smallish ponds run on a day-ticket basis, usually stocked quite heavily with fish. Carp are normally the main species and when these ponds start out these carp are normally "pastie size" (less than a foot long, probably 2lb or less in weight).
These ponds are commonly used for matches and the pole reigns supreme in the match fishermans armour - mainly because they are quickest at landing fish.
The length of line used with a pole is very short (perhaps even just a couple of feet long). The line is tied to some strong and very stretchy elastic "line" and this elastic is threaded through the top 3 or four sections of a pole (most long poles are made up of many take-apart sections).
When a big fish is hooked the elastic stretches out of the pole and the fish has to fight against the pull of the elastic.
Problem is that these small carp have now grown and in some cases have reached double-figures, perhaps even 20lbs! And however good a pole is, in some cases it's not up to the job of landing these carp.
In this case match anglers turn to the rod and reel, but it seems that they've also realised that using a centrepin instead of a fixed-spool gives you a much more direct contact with the fish, and can speed up the landing of a fish! They particularly suit fishing the margins for these big carp whereas before they would have used a short pole (or "whip"). |

Glenn,
I've used a pole once and at first I found them to be a bit unweildy. After my friend showed me how to hold the pole and how to feed the area I was fishing with a catapult while holding the pole, fishing with it got easier and easier. The pole my friend had was a Garbolino and it was around 12 meters. I liked using it so much I almost bought a whip he was trying to get rid of. Hopefully someday when my finances are a little better I'm going to invest in one.
You seem to know a lot about centre pin reels. In my previous post I asked about the full caged centre pin reels. How exactly do you cast one? I ask because I'm considering buying one.
Thanks,
Randy |

Very quick reply - more later (it's 2am and my little girl is having a bottle...)
The cast you would use would be the "two finger" cast - where you use two or three fingers to pull line from between the first couple of rings of the rod (taking line from the reel in the process).. When you cast out you release this line.
Limited distance compared to a wallis cast (that you can't really do with a cage reel) but the caged reels are less prone to tangles.
I'll elaborate tomorrow with a picture when I'm more awake!!! |

Right, as you can (hopefully) understand from my rather amateur picture I drew above, basically you pull line from between the reel and first ring, and between the next couple of rings. When you cast, you release these loops of line and that's all there is to it.
I've marked in the pic the fingers that I'd use to grab each bit of line. Obviously the distance you achive is limited to the amount of free line you create with the loops but with most 'pin fishing you don't need to cast a long way anyway!
Hope that helps. |

By the way - I filled up my pic quota with the user "spindle" so had to create "spindle2" to allow me to post the pic above!

I've used the cast you described. It is a fairly easy cast to perform and like you told me in your reply to my email sometime ago it boils down to timing. Thanks for all wealth of information you share with us here.

Guys,
just cranked up the picture upload quota, so hopefully the board will be problem free. Sorry for the inconvenience. Any issues, just let me know.
Best,
Brian
P.S. - The Quest gang is off the grid and on the river from Thursday afternoon thru Sunday. Play nice while we're away and have a great weekend. Looking forward to seeing some of you Sunday! |
