Kevan and I are part of a email-list based forum that once numbered 200 members, but has since been wittled down to about 20 members. It's quite active, and the low-numbers make it quite a close-knit group. What seems to keep us all together though is that almost every one of us are fanatical centrepin users. Of course, we also use fixed-spools, multipliers, we've even been known to fly-fish you know! But it's 'pins that we love to talk about most!!!
As you see, I have a few 'pins, Kevan has a monopoly when it comes to Speedias, and the others on our forum have a wide variety of makes, models and uses for them.
I'm quite interested in the US centerpins/centrepins (!!). It seems that there are very few 'pins from our side of the water that cross over to the US (the JWYoungs do, but not many others), and the US 'pins don't come over here either.
As for what use we put them too, have a look at our gallery and you'll spot quite a few 'pins in use for the UK species.

Spindle says it all really
As for rainbows.... well, I caught my first one earlier this year at my tender age of 41. Not on the pin - strictly speaking anyway. I won a days fly fishing tuition and being as I had never even touched a fly rod etc I thought why not? In doing so I caught my first rainbow. Not big, anything but at about 12 ounces. but my god it tasted good
Along with my collection of centrepins I do have some modern reels. 4 Abu multipliers (casting reels) a couple of Shimano Baitrunners - that don't get used much - and about 20 various Mitchell reels. These range from late 1950's Mitchell 300's to early 1970's Mitchell 410's and a 1980's Mitchell 300 (ugh!)
I fish for practically anything but whatever it is I normally use a pin in preference to a fixed spool. Over here we do a lot of carp angling. However, the 'in' fish at the moment has to be the barbel. A long, sleek barbuled torpedo of pure muscle. They are wonderful fish to catch. Many people put them on a par with the fighting quality of salmon. Not having caught a salmon I cannot honestly give a true comparison. but besides barbel I really love to catch perch. I believe perch are similar to bass apart from the very pronounced stripes.
Casting wise I have taught myself to Wallis cast. I'm not brilliant but I get by and as they say "practise makes perfect".
On the subject of Wallis casting I don't know if anybody is interested but I have some photographs - in a book - of the great FWK Wallis himself demonstrating the very cast that made him famous. I could post them up to the gallery if there is any interest? It would be in a few days as the PC I would have to use doesn't have a modem on it at the moment.
Just say the word and I'll get them sorted. |

I've been reading through the British morse fiahing sites for a few years and reciently found a float building forum on the Maggotdrowners. What a great site and tons of information. I'm also itching to get a 12 meter pole for carp fishing here for the summer.
