Hey Guys help me out with a line recc. Not sure if it'll be the 7/8 or 8/9 but here's my questions:

Should I go with the Rio Skagit line and cheaters or build custom?

If custom where should I start?

What about sink tips? Buy or build?

Is there a grain weight that these rods do best with?

I've got the idea I could start with a total weight, and go from there. If my thought process is correct I'd cut the sink tips to varying lengths/weights and minus that from the total, then take the "cheater" and try to get both ideal length and weight correct for the whole head&tip. But... I guess that's assuming I can get an ideal weight....help!

Hey E I have the 7/8 8/9 and the 9/10 plus a crap load of lines and custom tips give me a hollar and we can meet up so you can cast them and decide for yourself. the 9/10 is a friggin cannon. I cast the entire skagit head running line and 20 ft tip the other day. I love it.

heyb,
Pretty sure the grain wt is the actual of the listed head not the "ideal" weight for the rod...right? If you took say the WindCutter-8/9/10-55'-585grains that's going to be Medium right? So the rod will handle 525-750 grains looking at the charts? Back to the question, what's the ideal weight for the rod...assuming from the chart and a average of all the listed lines and thier rating...around 600 grains and at about 52' for the 13'9" 8/9 GLX

PS- See what happens when you guys keep draging me to those dam spey claves Wink

Ok, let's back up one more step.... Want to fish the Mo and Man, what heads both length and weight will I most likely be using? What rod and what weight should I match it up with?

Well to the mo and big man the Question I would just say that you would be wiser to decide weather you will fish more in the winter or fall and what size flies you are going to throw. Big flies +big Boy or 10+ft of t14 in the winter in my eye says 9/10 on either river but more so on the mo.

Now fall/earlywinter I am liking the 8/9 with usually less than 10 feet of t-14 with medium to large sized flies. it does have problems throwing the really big flies I have.

And the 7/8 I am using mostly using in the fall and late spring for dropbacks.

The lines I am using are rio Skagit
7/8 450 skagit + custom tips around 140 grains
8/9 550 skagit + custom tips between 140 and 195 grains
9/10 650 skagit + custom tips between 195 and 250 grains

all tips are made of t-14 and level 12 wt rio floating stock. so i can vary the depth and still have the same lenght tip.

Have the 7/8 Kispiox and the 9/10 GLX.

On the 7/8, I'm using an Airflo 470 grain - 32' head plus a homemade set of five 9' tips made out of DT-10-F and an Airflo Custom Cut 200. The 9/10 line is made out of 25' of Rio SSH 11/12 at 525, plus home made cheaters in 5 and 7.5' lengths from an SSH 10/11, plus homemade 10' tips made out of WF-12-F belly and T-14 for a max total of 765.

I've tried T-14 on the 7/8, and though it can cast it Ok, I didn't like the clunkiness of it. Perhaps it's the Airflo head, but it needs something lighter so I went to the DT 10 wt. + 200 tips. Don't use much bigger than a conehead bugger or 1/0 salmon iron on this one.

The GLX 9/10 handles the big stuff very easily and can chuck copious grains though I prefer mine on the light side to reduce fatigue and arm strain on the lift and sweep.

I'd make your judgement on rod choice based on the fly sizes you'll be chucking.

I used to use 300 and 400 grain BBs on the end of the SSH head but it was brutally heavy to cast and since I can get way deeper with much less effort using a full sink head, I sold the BBs.
