I'm looking for a shortish double hander, primarily for line control and I came across this term regarding rods. Any info?

Have to warn you that Jan of this year was when I bought my first fly setup. Been a centerpinner for the last 14 years so I'm used to the long rods. I currently got an 8wt 9ft with the SA "Steelhead" taper line.

Thanks.

The "European" label probably refers to the scandanavian underhand casting method, which uses "short" fast action rods, shooting heads, and long leaders. It's probably a fast action rod and well suited to the underhand style or overhead casting (primarily for surf fishing).

Traditional action rods are slower action and bend deeper into the blank. They are designed for performing traditional spey casts with long belly or DT lines.

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that unless your planning on booming out really long casts with shooting heads, you'd be better served by a slower action "traditional" rod.

Sage labels their speys as "Traditional" or European", which seems a bit strange to me, since "Traditional" casting originated on the River Spey.

Hope this helps.

Brian

Thanks, it did help. I'm just going for 30-40ft max with trees behind me.

Franky.
What rivers are you fishing that you would only want to cast 30'-40' with a spey rod.
This wouldn't be really pratical as most spey line heads start at approx. 54'.
If your any where near the Grand river area hook up with Rick and I some day and we can show you all the different set up's used in spey casting/fishing.

The biggest river I've fly fished so far is the lower Credit. I think that a spey rod would give you a lot more line control, especially in cross current situations where you need to keep some line out of the water.

since i know where you fish mainly i'd suggest a #6 or #7Wt in the 12'6" - 13'6" range

you still have those links for the other manufacturers i gave you a while back??

Hey Sage its been a while since I popped in here, ya I still got the links. Just tried out my 10ft 7wt GLX today and wow, what a difference 1 extra foot and a fast action blank can make! The only problem I had was not enough of a handle to get leverage fighting fish. I needed a two hander! Very Happy

I think the 10fter is more than enough for my fav trib but I'm still on the lookout another rod. I'm interested in these new blanks coming out but I'm undecided on how it'll be tied up: float or fly!
