Here's a question for some experienced pinners:

I know that most of the time, the stuff below the float is supposed to be angled slightly downstream of the float while its running (thus the offering is the first thing the fish sees).

When this happens, the top of the float points upstream; due to the very slight tension of the mainline back to the rod tip PLUS the stuff below it being downstream.

I was fishing an area that I 'thought' I knew the depth of, but it seemed like the float was tipping the other way, and I must guess that the stuff below the float was actually dragging behind; but not dragging bottom.

I started guessing that there may have been too much overall shot weight; despite the fact that the float was bouyant/ riding high enough over the water line.

Also, It was happening as the float was upstream and directly accross from me; and I was not in the desired position of being directly upstream from the area I was fishing. The hole was directly across the bank from me.

Any experts care to pipe in on this one? Fishing was tough for everyone that day; although I knew there were steel around.

Not an expert, but perhaps advanced enough to give some input. The upper water column flows faster than the lower in most systems. In theory when this happens all you need to do is change your shot pattern to bulk style or do a reverse graduating pattern. Small shot at the float and larger toward the bottom. If your running all the same size shot just keep sliding them down until your float begins to act properly(.). The idea is to create the least amount of resistence in the top water column. That is obviously achieved two ways. No shot at all or small shot near the surface. I would lean towrds no shot myself....Hope this helps.

Try this when you are drifting. When the float is cast up stream of where you're standing the float will drift down faster than the bait thus making your float point down stream. You may not be in a good position to control your float as it's drifting down. You may need to bat your reel and bring in line as fast as the float is drifting then as the float drifts past you then let the reel pay line out and hold back as you normally would OR reposition yourself above your chosen spot and drift down to it. There are many variables to consider. Playing around with your shot placement the kind of float you're using are all things to consider. Hope this helps.

Let me ask, was there a wind present that may have been blowing the line downstream causing the situation of which you speak? Also, maybe the pool you were fishing has complex currents that are harder to decipher under the surface (?).

Also, you don't always have to have the float pointing downstream. That is most important in faster flows, where the bottom currents are much slower compared to surface currents. In slower pools, it's often ideal to have the float straight up and down instead of . backwards, since flow in such pools (esp w/sand, silt, or fine gravel bottoms) are more uniform.
