I've heard you can bake them in your oven @ about 250 and boiling them. I tried baking a small batch of eggs and they came out pretty nice. You'll have to pull the eggs out every so often and run a hook through one until you get the desired firmness. Try it and let us know how it works.

| Water curing should be done to loose roe first of all not skein. At the river put the eggs in a bags and fill it up with some river water. The eggs dont have to site in the water for very long maybe 30 secs then drain the water out. When you get home spread them out on a cookie sheet covered with a few layers of paper towels, to help dry them, then just put the tray in the fridge from anywhere from 10-20 minutes. That should give ya a egg that you can bouce across the floor. Get a can of drano sink declogger the powdered not the liquid. 1 tablespoon to 10 cups of cold water, add a few cups of eggs and check them every minute or so with a hook for firmness, when they get to where you can put them on a hook and they wont break take them out and rinse them. and thats it. Thats the way ive done them, but its not the only way |

Egg (if I can call you Egg)...
There are a couple good recipes for single egg curing in the book Egg Cures by Scott Haugen. It's the best cure book I've read and is put out by Frank Amato Publications (Salmon Trout Steelhead magazine, etc...) The guys who wrote the one single egg cure are from Michigan and not from the West coast like most of the other contributers to the book. I have not personally tried the cure, so don't hold me to it, but it sounds legite. I haven't tried it only because of the great quantity and quality of the synthetic eggs these days (in many colors and scents) as well as just tying up single eggs in mesh for durablities sake. Anyway, you can find the book at amatobooks.com or I'll send it to ya. zadorecky@yahoo.com |

Instead of using a plastic bag a nylon stocking can also be used. Put the fish in tail first and push the eggs out o fthe fish and into the stocking let it dangle in the water for a few seconds and you have water cured eggs. I was shown this by a Canadian pinner in NY a number of years ago.

I am no expert, but I make some real good Singles. first always make sure that when you are handling raw eggs that you have no non fish scent on or near your hands. A raw egg sucks up everything it touches. Take the raw eggs and stick them in some thing clean and scent fee. Put river water on them for about 45 to 60 minutes. Most of the eggs will turn very opaque or milky, some completely white.
Take the eggs out of the water and put in a ziplock bag, bucket with a lid or anything clean and you can refrigerate. Place the eggs in cooler or refrigerator for at least 24 hours to let the eggs come back to normal color, then treat them with your favorite cures. Wizard from pro- cure or atlas. Just sprinkle enough to coat the eggs, let them juice up, then after about 3 to 5 days the eggs will suck the juice back up and BINGO, you have singles that will not come off when cast and milk nicely during drifts. They are no good for sacks, since the skins are so tough a hammer will not break them, but when fished single, they are awesome. |

For a clear egg i use ACID. Muriatic Acid works but make sure you use loose eggs and just water harden them. NO SALT or anything else.
Phosphoric Acid is the best but you may have a problem getting it. They sell it sometimes in a drug store but a chemical supply house is best.
First wash your eggs in cold water then put the desired amount in a pot half filled with cold water. Then add a small amout of Acid to it (enough so you will see the eggs turn more clear). Then stir with a spoon to mix the Acid evenly thoughout. Have some paper towls ready and a small thin wire hook handy. Take a egg out after 2 or 3 min. and do a hook test. Before the desired consistency put the eggs in a stainer and drain the Acid and run water to stop the acid reacting.
Dry them on paper towls and then put in jars. (The reason for taking them out before the desired consistency is the acid will continue reacting for awhile even after you drain and wash them). Once in the jar you can add different scents to make them even more effective. I use Cod Liver Oil most of the time, but i have mixed garlic, chesse, anise, herring oil, etc. for some interesting combinations.
Having good quality LOOSE EGGS is very imprtant. Also for the first while do smalll batches till you work out all the bugs. Trust me though. IT MAKES THE BEST SINGLE EGGS EVER. Much better than store bought ones.

what about boric acid(borax)???
i use about 1/4 cup borax to 10 cups water and stir occasionally until you reach desired firmness...
now my question is this...
ive heard borax takes away from the scent of an egg...
is this true? |
