For under 400 dollars what do you guys think is the best drift rod available on the market today. Custom, off the shelf it doesn't matter. I am in the market for a new rod and I'd like to keep it under 400
Im looking into the GL 3's, probably going to have to go custom to get exactly what I want. |

I build a lot of custom drift rods.
I think there are many options. IMO for $325.00 range I build customers two options. If they want a 9 foot rod I build the St.Croix Legend Ultra Blank with SIC fuji guides and custom spun cork handle.
If the customer wants longer then 9 feet, the options are being limited every year, currently the G-Loomis GL 9'9 8 weight seems to be a popular rod.
For a lot less money many of my customers are having Rainshadow's out of Batson built.
Here is a rod I just build myself with Ti-Sic Guides, it is a 4f908 Croix, I built it for use with a fly reel with 8lb mono and with six pound leaders, fast action, fast hook set, on med to small rivers.
Close up view of the handle.

Johnny let me tell you something awesome. You won't be disappointed matter of fact you'll smile with joy everytime out. Do like I did go online somewhere and get all the stuff you need to build your own rod. You can customize it to your perfect needs. Like for example I went with an 11' GLoomis It's black. Then I bought dark blue thred to tie on the eyelets. I went with 12 eyelet that are gold. I'm short so I went with a 12" butt. Action is Med.Light. I went with that because light action alone doesn't give me the feel I like when drifting.. But everytime out I look at my rod and just think about how fun it was building it. It's caught me some woppers. Including a master anglers award for a male steelhead that weighted 15 lbs. 10 oz. It was a hog. But just think when you and your buddies go out and they have their store boughten rods and here you are with custom rods your built.. Good fishing my friend. |
