How's the hook up rate with the bead not pegged? Just slipping it on to the lead and letting it sit at the hook?

The hook up rate is better with them pegged or surgeons knotted 2" above hook for 2 reasons;
1-If the fish are cautious and not very aggressive they will quickly eject the bead because it is hard. When they do this hydrodynamics actually will swing the bare hook into the mouth if 2-3" seperates bead and hook. If there is no lead this would be a missed strike
2-If the fish are being aggressive and pounding the bead that 2-3" lead between bead and hook will allow hook to catch before being swallowed with bead. That makes for a much better survival rate.
As a result it is better for hooksets and survival rates

Thank you, I may just have to see for myself. Beads have gotten a bad rap, however I like to make my decisions based on experience. Having looked at them I have to ask what size? Do I go bigger for "a tasty treat" or smaller for "hey it's an egg" I am guessing that color choice is the same as with sacks or yarn?

I use the 6mm size which is closer to the steelhead egg size. About the only time I use the beads is when the fish start to get 'picky', and finesse is the only way to get them to hit.

Regarding colour choices, take a look at the 'how to' page on the website.
There is a 'steelhead selection' box that although pricey, has a bunch of good colours in it.
It's like the colours of mesh we tie the roe in, they get what we buy Laughing.

Regarding the bad rap
Reefers use a lot of the same equipment sportsmen do. It is their 'intent' and actions which are illegal

I like beads in clear water During early fall I use 8mm beads which are the size of chinook eggs and In late fall and spring I use 6mm beads about the size of trout eggs.

All those pictures of trout with beads are photoshopped!!!! Beads don't work !!!!! Cool Cool Cool

Well ocasionally they do.....hehehehe
I use mainly 6 and 8 mm in orange or red shades over painted with flat white paint or Snowflake Frost Nail Polish. When bottom bouncing I use 10 mm beads and my favorite steelie bead is a 12mm dark red/Snowflake Frost bad boy!!! Laughing Laughing Laughing
