Just thought I'd pose the question to maybe try and alleviate some of the negativity that's been predominant lately .
I've got a buddy who uses these things almost exclusively in Alaska and swears they're deadly (I'm joining him for a week this Sept ).
Has anyone tried them locally? They look pretty deadly dontcha think?
They're rigged very simply by pegging them with a toothpick just up from your hook...

Depending on your philosophy you could attract alot of negative attention talking about beads

| Hey Trip... Use them all the time.. The only real problem with them, is that trout have a tendency to swallow them. This is why they peg them in AK.. Hook hits the outside of the lip , on the way in. Easier to release the fish, with less harm to them.

| I've used them tied up as a single egg patern with decent sucess. No issues with fish swallowing them from what I've seen.

Thanks for the input Wally.
So if you're not pegging them how are you rigging them?

| Mike, I run them straight on the leader, usually above a snelled yarn fly . sometimes free runnig above a regular fly, like a wooley b or even above a large nymph. Sometimes just on the leader, above a hook. Haven't tried pegging them here, because most ppl here would think you were lineing the fish.

Interesting, thanks!
That'd be an easy way to fish an egg sucking leach and have the ability to change the colour of the egg as you see fit. Very cool .

[quote="Bill Shearer"]This is the way I use them. Works really well. No toothpics required!

I saw that on the web page Bill, makes sense.
So have you had any success with them?

I have had good success on northern and southern streams with them.
Anytime the water conditions get more than 3' of visibility, they work well for me.
I find any of the 'natural egg' colours work well, from 'just laid' to the 'boiled egg' colour of what you get in the jars of Mikes brand from out west.
Strangely enough, I ve had good success on mauve as well.
I used to do well with yarn flies, but find these are better in the really clear conditions.
Frogpoop, I agree with you, so I just went with a small bag of each. Split with a couple of buddies, the costs are bearable, and you end up with a good assortment.
The people at "troutbeads" are very helpful as well.

| I tend to use either that colour or white with about equal success. Make sure you scale back your hooksets or you'll have lots of rigs in the trees!
