Here is a new spool design from Russia.
What do you think about it?
The spool is 130 mm in diameter.
It is just a model though.

The spools are just 3D models at this moment.
The second one will probably require titanium. But if I ever come to making them I will start with duraluminum (aviation aluminum). I think it may be enough for both spools.
The sizes and walls thickness are not final.
I was mostly thinking about the appearance.
I want to make some unique spool and porting design.

the spool actually spins around the Hub. anyone seen or heard of the originator of this oddity?

Hi, looked through this interesting thread last night - decided to join in.
SageDrifter, reel in question was indeed made by guy name Jason here in Ontario (Mississauga). His last name escapes me but proper name of the reel would be: Jason Wasseossa Reel. He only made a handfull of these, I think dozen or so in 1989 or 1990. Cannot remember for sure. I still have mine around the house. I also got his prototype - I think Jason gave me that after I purchased the Wasseossa Reel. Prototype was simply called: 'WAS'.
Reels were never good, I did upgrade bearings and it was OK for bigger flows as it recovered line well. I did fish with the Wasseossa one winter though.
The odd name is that of a lake in Muskoka region. Jason's family had a cottage there and he spent most of his young years on the Wasseosa Lake. He purposely misspelled the name (adding second 's' on the reel). I don't know what happened to Jason, have not seen him since the early 90's. Hope this helps. You seem to be a keen pin collector.
Cheers.

As always Denniskap you bring some interesting designs to the table. They look really good. I say turn them.

I'll second that. They look great! You could put Russia back on the map and make up for those tin punched Ukranian made nasties that are always floating around on Ebay.

Machine time on the ones from Russia would be quite lengthy. I like the first design. I am not a fan of ultra lightweight if strength is sacraficed.
Regardless of my opinion, nice designs.

I am not 100% done yet... have to do some finishing on the reel seats, all the bearings and shims are in and the locking mechanism in place.
Have to replace all the steel fasteners with SS versions but I think I am pretty close - spins real nice!
Assembled weight is 320g - OD = 5.5"
