|
|
Right,
with all the activity on the site lately and our busy schedules, Quest has really fallen behind in posting new Great Lakes fly patterns. Way behind! I haven't even had a chance to fill my own fly box, let alone new patterns for the site... Here's where you come in!
Since we've got some great tyers on the site, and I'm sure you've all got some "hot" patterns, we've decided to enlist your help and make it worth your effort. So, we're going to try and run a fly tying contest this month, with the winner getting $25.00 bucks worth of fly tying materials. OK, it's not a free trip to Jamaica or anything, but $25 buys a lot of materials and all you're doing is tying a fly!
The "Rules"
Tie up your favorite fly. Make sure it's not all ready listed in our fly patterns yet or it doesn't count! Check out the formatting of our fly patterns, because those are the questions you'll need to provide with your entry. Mail us your fly and the completed "form" questions (see follow-up post) to enter. You can email us the completed form if you prefer, but you have to mail us your fly! Make sure you include your real name (not just screen name!) and mailing address, so we can send the winner their prize! IMPORTANT By entering the contest you are giving Quest permission to publish your entry in our fly pattern library. Credit for the pattern will of course be given to each tier, but please don't enter if you're not OK with seeing your fly on the web!
The Judging
The winner will be determined by 2 factors. We will of course be taking the originality and perceived effectiveness of the pattern into account, but the thoroughness of your "application" will be our primary judging criteria. This means that providing a good description, accurate materials list, and complete and precise step-by-step instructions will get you further than just tying a "cool" fly. After all, the goal is to help us get some new patterns up on the site! The entries will be judged by myself, Eric Z, and Chris Hatcher.
The Prize
The winner will receive $25 worth of fly tying "stuff". If a manufacturer or fly shop would like to step up and sponsor this little contest, you'll be getting whatever it is they feel like donating. If the prize is coming out of my pocket, I'll be happy to pick up whatever it is you're wanting (provided I can find it around town)! Or, let me know what your preferred fly shop is and I'll try and get you a $25 gift certificate. I'm pretty flexible!
More Annoying "Rules"
The contest is only open to registered users of the Quest forum. Registration is free and easy, so it's pretty much open to any one It's Febuary 13th, so lets say all entries must be received by Quest by end of day March 13th. A winner will be declared here on the forum by the end of March and contacted by email. Multiple entries will be allowed, so the more you enter, the better your chance of winning.
Oh yeah, the contest is not open to Quest staff members. You lazy bums should be tying patterns anyways!
Good tying!
Best,
Brian

Good to see you're till interested! We could use the help!
Before filling in the entry form, please do yourself a favor and take a peek at the following patterns for a good example of what we're looking for!
Sneaky Pete
Winters Hope
The "Form"
Your Name:
Your Screen Name:
Your Email Address:
Your Mailing Address:
Pattern Name:
Originator:
Materials List: (Please follow the same format as the links provided. If a recipe needs a specific brand or size, like a hook model, please mention it by name.)
Description: (Talk about when or why the fly was developed, things that make it unique, how to fish it, etc... Provide some "color" to the fly!)
Step By Step Tying Instructions: (For the best chance to win, be as detailed and thorough as possible. Be carefull not to forget or take a step for granted. Try and think about how you'd tell a non-tier how to tie the fly)
Additional Tips: (This is optional, but can help you win. Add things like popular color or tying variations, short-cuts, etc...)
Bonus Points
We'll be giving serious bonus points to anyone sparky enough to include good quality step-by-step photos with their entry (digital prefered).
Entry Instructions
Mail your fly and completed entry questions to:
Quest Outdoors, Ltd.
Attn: Fly Tying Contest
PO Box 6334
Plymouth, MI 48170
If you wish, you can email your entry questions to us using the PM function of the board (this makes our life a little easier), but you must mail your fly to the address above for your entry to count. We need it to photograph it for the site!
Any questions, shoot us an email or ask them here. Thanks for helping make Quest a great angling resource!
Best,
Brian |

Sorry for the delay Ray.
The contest is over, and since it didn't have a lot of interest we never continued it. If there is more support, I'd be happy to start it up again.
On the other hand, if you (or anyone else) want to submit a fly for the site following the format above (step by step photos very much appreciated), I'll gladly send out a handful of my favorite patterns. Just name your species and give me a week or two to tie em.
If anyone is interested, let me know.
Best,
Brian |

How about a spawn bag tying contest? Send me all your best efforts and I will judge them on the water
We used to have an Ugly Fly contest at camp every year. Guy who caught a fish on the most hideous looking fly got a bottle of Whiskey
