I'm very interested in doing some steelhead or salmon fishing in upstate New York in Polaski this fall. I've heard that it can be shoulder to shoulder fishing, is that true?. I've never fished the area, and was wondering if a center pin and float would be an accepted method to use there?
Thanks

Yes, the Salmon River can get crowded [more so during Chinnie season in Sept/Oct], but with almost its entire fishable length open to public access, you can usually find some quieter spots. Nov/Dec sees lighter traffic, especially on weekdays and if you're willing to do some hiking. Drift boats can occasionally be a pain in the {horse's rear}, though.
In recent years centrepins have become quite popular in upstate NY [like elsewhere in the US], to the point that most Pulaski tackle shops [eg. Fat Nancy's] carry a full range of floatfishing gear. The upper river is a "flies only zone", but that doesn't mean you can't fish it with a float and artificials.
Some of the smaller tribs, just to the north, offer excellent c/p opportunities if the Salmon is blown.

BT, I was curious about if the Fly Zone was truely a fly zone or an arificial only zone so I just checked the copy of the regs that NY sent me with my licence.
About the Fly Zone
Tackle Restrictions: Tackle is restricted to a traditional flyrod, flyreel and flyline.

Never been bothered there using c/p's.......yet.....hehe. I guess it's open to interpretation, just as most of the "Orvis brigade" there is chuckin-n-duckin or even indie fishing which some would consider less than "traditional" in itself. Until recently, most NY'ers thought c/p's were oversized fly reels, anway.
Thanks for the heads up though, wouldn't want to argue the point in front a Justice of the Peace. Don't spend a lot of time in that zone [too far upriver for freshies], but do have some fond memories of a particularly agressive hot Coho bite there one October ! |
