Just want to say hi to everyone. I have fished all my life but never for steelhead. A new friend took me steelhead fishing this past fall and I was blown away. I feel like that army officer in Apocolypse Now when he sent back the message "sell the house, and get on with your life, I'm never coming home". What a great time and what a fish. I'm now debating on getting a centerpin reel. Any advise would be welcomed although my "guru" is doing a great job teaching me.

centerpinning is a fun and effective way to catch steelhead. Its not the only way but it is a good way. Have fun. But my vote is to not go pin. There is so much involved in steelheading that skipping the other stuff will make you lose out on allot of skills that will make your pinning more effective.

Unless of coarse you want to catch fish the easy way with out a tremendously amount of skill investment. Then buy a pin Very Happy

The horror. The horror.

But he does have a point. And buying a pin will not automatically put more fish on right off the bat. Better to fish a lot with your mentor and learn as much as you can, once you have it somewhat figured out you are ready for your next step. There are a lot of CP rigs that never see the light of day because their owners don't catch fish on them.

thanks for the responses. I did well fishing with a spinning reel, and I'm good at watching and learning. I know how important the natural drift presentation is. I did buy a center pin reel to try at Cabellas. An . Aventa vt1002 that I will try to learn with. I saw on another post that the regular Aventa is silver and the Aventa pro is bronze, this one is bronze but is doesn't say pro on it. Anyway it is a start besides walking in a stream not catching anything is still better than almost anything else, right?

I would recommend going through the pains of learning to use a CP. I started off Float fishing with a spinning reel, which worked good, but it doesn't compare to using a CP reel.

Using my new center pin, getting better at the casting technique. Hooked four fish but lost all four cause I struggled with the drag technique. Went back to my spinning reel caught eight. I need more practice with the casts and certainly with the feathering of the drag. I will stay with it though. What a beautiful fish. Very Happy Very Happy
