I'm hoping to get you're thoughts on a complimenting line for a Scott ARC1196. I originally had a RIO Wincutter versi-tip line on it and wasn't impressed with how the connecting loops came through the guides. The line was purchased shortly after it came out so maybe improvements have been made. I don't necessarily need a versi-tip type line. Your opinions would be appreciated. Thanks

How are you fishing and most common length of line your working with? Those two factors will help determine line choice.
There are alot of good workable fishing lines out there that aren't marketed as 'Spey' type. |

I will be mostly swinging medium to large size streamer with a working line lenth of 40-60ft.
Do you recommend using tips to control depth or various lenths of T-14 on a floating line? |

Which WC, 6/7/8? Those heads are approx 48' The loops get easier to live with over time... Drop the tip when stripping or fish running, ect.
Another way to go if you dont utilise the 'tip 2' option of your WC would be a line that is only looped once @ 15' so would always be outside the tip top.
An uncut light floating line has to much taper for turn over with tips, especially T-14 that stuffs pretty serious. There are all kinds of new poly type leaders out this year. A couple between 10'-15' might work for you. Some of those are pretty heavy also. The line tip can be trimmed back and really help.
Hate to continue the trend of recomending a skagit line but they do work well. Guessing about a 400 grain. Only lacking some tips unless your keeping your WC, other wise build some from RIO's T-11 or Airflo's Custom cut 200 [pre looped]
Any lines you can try do so. Mooch demos from buddys and shops, best way to pick a winner. |

| My WC is a 6/7/8. Thanks for you ideas...sounds like I need to do some experimenting with the line I already have, and go from there. |

| Or get a Delta in the same grainage. The only loop/loop connection is from mainline to sink tip and it casts way better than those clunky windcutters... Since you are working with such a short amount of line a skagit line would also work well and will toss larger flies much better... |

Hi Justin,
I also have a Scott ARC 1196.great rod for a trout spey and a light steelhead rod.I found a Windcutter 5/6 multi tip cast quite nicely on that rod.The 5/6 has only 4 tips floater, clear intermediate and 2 sink tips so when loope you only have one loop to loop connection which will usually be outside of the guides when casting. Also cast a 400 or 450 grain skagit head like there is no tomorrow. More then a few times the skagit head has made the difference between fishing and heading home when the conditions have been extremely windy.my Windcutter 5/6 is presently on loan to a fellow in Calgary who is trying it out on his Sage 5120.I also tried the Windcutter 6/7/8 on the rod and wasn't overly fond of the way it felt.My Windcutter 5/6 should be back in the next month or so.Once it comes back if you haven't found a line you like you are welcome to borrow the Windcutter 5/6 to try on the rod for awhile to see it it will work for you.I also have an S.A. Spey Classic 6wt. on order to try on the rod as a longer belly line. You could give it a try on the rod as well.I'll contact you once the lines are back and we can arrange to get them to you if you like to try on your rod.Just for reference I am in the Kitrchener area.
Thanks,Randy. |

Justin[/quote] Hey Justin, This is what I got. I love steelheading! Their far more of a challange then Salmon. Mostly because their line shy. I've read almost every Forum conversation on line types and I've used many myself. I've fishing of 16yrs around this parts. I started with regular old Berkley 6 to 8lb. Green. But that was on the Kalamazoo river. Clarity is moderate. I just loosened my drag and played the fish longer. When fishing rivers like the PM that are clear I use Flouro. Seaguar 8lb and I love it. But so many people focus on the line and their forgeting one important thing. The rod.. Last year I broke my favorate rod and used insted a Ugly Stick Light/med. light action/ 7' with a Braid main line and flouro leader. I broke of more fish in one year then I did my 15 yrs prior. I went back to a 10' Riversider rod. 12lbs berkley XT main line and Sauger 8lb flouro and I just tore um up. Be careful of snags because Flouro doesn't have as much stretch a mono. But its clearer and you'll get more stricks.. This is my experience. |

Thank you guys for all the feedback and Randy for your generosity! I'd love to try the 5/6 when it returns, if I haven't found something before then. I'll keep you posted...

Justin,
Call Poppy at Red Shed Fly Shop. He will send you out some lines to try free of charge. He has tons of demo lines for guys to try. Then if you find one you really like just let him know which one send the demo line back and purchase a new line. All you have to pay to demo the lines is whatever it costs you to ship them back. Poppy is without a doubt the best shop to ever deal with when it comes to spey. I would seriously consider casting a Delta line and comparing it to the Windcutter. I think you would like the Delta a lot more. |
