Here are a series of images that I have in contribution to this great thread. They include the following:
The mandrel insertion 2X2X6
Hand shaping
The lathe...Craftsman hobby lathe with a custom chuck all under $150.00. Paint cans stabilize the ShopVac nozzle.
The final product...West Coast selection of jumbo floats that include, for scale, a very interesting 4" silicon impregenated aluminum backplate. A BC native who resides on the Vedder River tried his hand at producing a reel amply named The Vedder River Supreme...Never made it to market, but he had a box full of backplates we could help ourselves too. Of course there are a pile of Waynes BC Supremes in the mix...Thanks Wayne and TM!

The . cleaner set up is a stroke of genius . I wish I would have thought of that years ago so I wouldn't have to breathe in the saw dust and get my allergies goin' .
Those are some nice floats you have pictured

Ya, not sure how the ./paint can thing ever came together. After looking at them next to the lathe on a shelf for two years it finally dawned on me that it was viable makeshift way of securing the nozzle.
The lathe was a catalogue item exclusively. Have heard that they no longer sell it, but cannot verify that. I recall purchasing it through the Sears online catalogue Louis. The chuck I got at Ace Hardware. |
