Hello all,
newbie here. Nice place yah got!
I was wondering if anyone might be able to recamend some bait rigs for peir fishing? I'm addicted to big lake run fish, but I get sea sick. So I'm stuck either fishing off the peirs, or up the rivers if I hope to catch them.
I've casted spoons and rapalas, and plunked some skein a few times, but I'm looking to try something new.
Any suggestions?
Thanks for any help.

Fishing from shore is much more fun with the lighter tackle anyway!
Here is the most productive rig I use. I have a 12lb mailine where I slide a 1-2 oz. slip-sinker (bell or pyramid) followed by a bead. Next I tie on a ball-bearing snap swivel (the bead protects the knot from the sliding weight. Then I attach a 6 ft piece of 10lb flouro leader material to the opposite end of the swivel. Finally I use a #4 red octopuss style hook (circle hooks work too). Use a live alewive w/ this rig. Cast it off the pier and set you rod down w/ your bail open, then pull some line off you spinning reel and wrap it around a glass bottle. Now sit, relax and wait. When a fish hit you bottle will fall over and line will peel off the reel. Pick rod up, close bail and the fun begins. The beauty of this rig is that the fish won't feel the weight because the line just slides through when it runs. Hope this helps! Jordan

Thanks for the reply pin. Not sure where I can find alewives. Do big shiners, or smelt work? I imagine it's probably important the bait is alive. Do you hook the bait through the lip, tail, or body?
Thanks again for the info.

Yes, the bait should be alive but I have caught fish on dead bait with or w/out a small float on the leader to keep the bait off the bottom. If you can get smelt that should will work just as good if not better than alewives. I have had no luck w/ shiners, but like everything they probably have their place and time, you never know. I always hook the bait through the back, under the spine, just before or after the dorsal fin. Jordan >))))">
