Hey guys, anyone familiar with this particular rod? I'm considering aquiring one, but will likely have to do it sight unseen. Any impressions, type of line used effectively with the rod, etc., would be greatly appreciated. For what it's worth I'm looking at this rod for 2 purposes, 1. a light high stick nymphing rod for steelhead. 2. for fishing out of my pontoon in estuary situations. Thanks!

Tripper, this is one of my favourite rods. I have fished a variety of different lines on it,ussually shooting heads cut from either a SA short head or an Airflow(short) Delta. Please feel free to call me at the fly shop 1-888-822-3474 if you would like some specifics.

Tripper:

i used this rod last Spring in Float Form ( you may rememb the pics on FF.Net) it's a sweet lil stick. i'm now in the process of converting it back to Spey form to use during the Winter months dredging the East Ditches. a nice quick stick with planty of backbone. i landed several mid-teen Steel on it with no problems at all. it's quick enuff to fo rshort distamnces but can fire out 50-70' of line with authority as well.

as for a line recommendation/s SA's Short Head works well, and Sage's own "Ultra-Light Spey Line" for the 5120, does a better job of loading this blank, then it's original 5120-4 designation.

Great info. Steve, thanks. Just ordered the blank today, don't think I did too bad, $257.00 incl. tax and shipping. Can't wait to get it!

Steve, couple questions: You mention a "short head" line. Obviously this doesn't refer to a spey line. This "may" be what I need as the rod may be used more for overhead style casting. I certainly won't need a long belly line when fishing flatwater in the pontoon. Is there a specific SA short head line that you'd reccomend? Also, the Sage U.L. Spey line you mention, is it a true "steelhead taper" line with a long belly or is it more of a weight forward line? Any additional info. greatly appreciated. Cheers, Mike

no the "short head" is a Spey line. it's just designed for shorter distances where your not required to pick up heavy tips and a large amount of line off the water. you may wanna look at a "tip system" and a spare spool for the reel you plan on using, this would allow you to venture to those deep estuary situations you mentioned previously

the Sage U.L Spey Line, is a true Spey line and not a Steelhead taper, although one could certainly classify it as a steelhead line for application purposes. Dana Sturms spey pages forum is where i got the info re: it's better suited to the 6126-3

No, don't think so. I'll likely try to get J.C. to build it if he's not too busy.

A friend of mine has this rod and we've tried it with both the Windcutter 7/8/9 and a MidSpey 6/7. The MidSpey worked the best -- a very nice fit. It's a very nice rod for the smaller GL tribs.
