I purchased a Bob James 2080 reel a couple of months ago and recently I've noticed a rasping sound when ever I spin the reel. Sometimes it will spin without making a sound and other times it will make a rasping sound.
I never dropped the reel and didn't notice any wobbling. Defective bearings? Too much oil or not enough? Grit got into the bearing? Any thoughts? |

| Try flushing the bearings out with lighter fluid before tearing into it. |

| My Bob James is rather noisey and it isn't from the bearings. As long as it starts-up like a champ, don't worry about it!!! |

The start-up is fine and that's why the noise had me wondering. |

I'm sure you've heard Mike's Bob James yet it's still spinning like new. I compare the BJ to the AK-47 when it comes to reliability.

I used some lighter fluid and used a couple drops of sewing machine oil and the reel still makes that sound. I was going to sell it and I'm concerned that the noise will make the person who bought it unhappy.
I can't figure out why it's making that noise....... |

You guys need to quit blaiming bearings for reel noise. Virtually all the bearings used in pins are shielded precision miniature bearings - ABEC1 thru 3. I've sold thousands of these bearings in various industries and it would take an act of god to get grit and grim in the bearing itself in an industrial application, much less a fishing reel - trust me.
If you are getting noise, it's usually one of two things:
1) Slop. Meaning the spool moving slightly on the pin. I have a Bob James and it talks on the retrieve. The reel starts up great but the spool has some degree of slop on the shaft of pin.
2) Grit between the spool and backplate. IF you get a coffee grinder type noise, take the spool off and clean. This is usually the biggest culprit...
Just trying to help some of you Buckeyes....

Just replace the bearings, but have it done by someone that,s up to the job, MOST!!!!!!! BEARING FAIL because they are installed wrong.
And don't clean or degrease them, let the guy who buys it do that.
Thats where most of center pin bearing trouble starts.
Just my opinion

The grit and grim you speak of are generally not something solid getting past the shields. It is rust, wear offs and mostly dissolved solids that are deposited(when water evaporates) on the bearing surface turning the balls into little round pieces of sand paper. |

But a lot of guys have this obsession that you absolutely must change bearings on even a brand new reel. I really don't understand the entire mentality involved. When I plunk down several hundred bucks for a good reel, I expect it to have quality parts that will last a long time. One of my high end reels loves to make the coffee grinder sounds if you whisper "grit" within earshot of it. Never the bearing, always solved by a quick cleaning. Another went perhaps 10 years of heavy usage before I put 9 dollars worth of bearings into it, now it works like a Swiss watch. |

When I purchased my 2080 brand new, it made an intermittent grating sound/vibration right out of the box. I had the guys at Cortland return it to JW Young and they found it to be a bad bearing, so you never know. Turn around time was surprisingly fast for being shipped overseas ...if I recall correctly, about a week.
If you're pretty sure it's a bearing issue, it might be worth it to give them a call. |

| My BJ was rather noisey when I got it out of the box a couple months ago, yet the start up was not impaired at all, the main thing about any reel is performance, so I just dealt with the fact that the noise is made since the performance is still great. After I spooled it up too the noise was greatly reduced to the point I only hear it if it is extremely quiet, so just keep in mind that the performance is still great! |
