Which reel would you say is the most sturdy 4.5" reel they offer?
1) Bob James
2) Purist II Y2041 or Y2051
3) John Wilson Heritage
I ask this as I have heard that some of their reels just don't seem to be really beefy. I have no idea as I have never even held one. I will not be running anything over 8 pound leads on this so I wouldn't think this would be an issue, but would appreciate any input anyone may have...
Thank You,
Kory |

The Heritage is pretty much a mondo ported 2041. I had a 2041 for a long time, very solid reel. Hands down one of my favorite production reels. You'll be pleased.

Its a pretty purist, not much different.
The bob james holds up great for me with 10lb leads and salmon on big waters. Honestly your going to break a rod before hurting the reel. Plus the customer service is great |

I have the Bob James and the Purist and I have not had a problem w/either. I mainly fish the Bob James, and over the years have beat up on it and dropped it plenty w/out incident. I don't think it would be a top choice for real big water (a very light reel), but suits me fine for Lake Erie tribs and just about every other GL trib I've used it on.

| I've used a Bob James now for about 4 years. They look much more fragile than they are. I took it to michigan for kings this past fall and fished a 15lb main line and 12lb p-line cfx tippet and honked on fish with it and it held up just fine. |

Have to agree with the Monkey here... hmm I must be getting soft . I have had my James for close to 3 seasons and while I wouldnt say its beefy it has fished great for that time.
Like he said for the Erie tribs its pefect with a nice 4-8# stick

If you do decide to go with any of the 'Bob James' reels (Y2080, Y2080L, or Y2084L ~ the 4" Lightweight), make certain that you apply only a reasonable amount of pressure when winding new monofilament on the reel, the spools are heavily ported and I have seen one case where a user wound line on using far too much tension, thereby warping the spool.
I use fly line for backing on my Y2080L, and it seems to be just fine, certainly lighter than using a tonne of dacron.
I no longer fish with my 2040 (original Purist), but I did find it to be less affected by dust or grit, as the bearings were less exposed than on the Bob James. |

Just like a fly reel, this one needs backing on it. |

| i have a BJ 2080 that i use alot for 3 seasons, it has caught Browns and CoHos up to 19lb with 6 lb tippet and TONS of steel, the reel is more durable that it appears, the start up is incredible and the weight is like a feather( balances out my GLX's perfect) I havent used the purist reels but have heard alot of good things about them. |
