I am looking to devulge away from fishing steelies bottom bouncing and with a fly rod. Therefore I am looking to begin fishing spawn under floats. My thoughts on the rod were a 10' 6" but we have a 11' 6" available at Gander this year and my questions is would you say the longer the better? Which would you go with? I am putting a spinning reel on it (cant afford the pin currently with tuition prices so high).
Also what size floats are you typically using (in grams)? Lets say the conditions are 6-7 feet of water and the current is walking speed.
Thanks in advance,
Jim |

11.5 foot for sure unless it is a pure noodle. Most run 13+ foot rods with the exception of smaller sheds like the White, etc.
6-8g should do you pretty well to learn. Once you get more and more proficient, maybe go lighter, depending on the time of year (winter), river, and so on. Use as light as you can cast to where you need to!
I started out with a 10.5' and spinning rod myself |

Fish with the 11'6'' Gander rod...I got a good friend into fishing floats for steel last year and he did well with the 11'6'' Gander GS Steelhead Advantage rod. His first time out with it he got a 17+ Male on that rod and has since caught many more on it. So I hope this helps...good luck.

Length DOES matter!
The 11'6" is a nice rod for the money!
For spinning tackle the 6gr-8gr clear GM floats should work fine. Load them properly so just the orange shows. Good luck! |

| What kind of water R u fishin? If you are hitting the smaller tribs, you will not really need a longer rod. But if you you are on the Mighty Mo, the Grand or other big water, a longer rod may come in handy. I bought a 10.5' with a spinner rod then picked up a pin reel later. I now have a 15.5' rod for the bigger water with a new pin and am not afraid to put my sholder into the larger fish. Like they say, water, time of year, and the fish you are after play a big role in the length of rod that you are after. hope this helps =) |

I ended up buying the 11 6 and it is wonderful. I used it for the first time today. I was not able to get any takes but I love the rod. It gives me tremendous control of my line.
Thank you for all of the replies / opinions. It is great that you guys were willing to help a fellow angler! |
