| Anyone own and use a KAYAK for serious STS fishing? I'm very close to buying my own and have thought of many different applications for Great Lakes salmon and steelhead fishing. I can't be the first one (in the Great Lakes) to think of this. Who else is doing it, and where? |

| There's a guy who fishes off Grand Haven with a dipsy on his kayak. Last time I saw him he was trying to put the screws to a big nasty on its way to Port Sheldon. |

F2M,
They are quite popular here in NY, nice for reaching water that is too deep or fast too wade - or get at private water . Beats a drift boat if you're solo...
I am thinking about one as well, what models have you looked at?
I saw a piece in the US Airways Mag about an outfitter that runs open ocean trips in Mexico. Tuna, Dorado and Roosterfish would be a BLAST in one! They even land a few Sails and Marlin every season as well. I'll have to scan the article and post it.

Buzz,
Nice too see you wash the spawn juice off your hands long enough to sit down at the keyboard
The big question in my mind was river or open water. I'll explain the "was" in a minute. A big stable open water kayak suitable for off the beach or away from the pier type fishing would be a death trap on a river. They dont turn worth a darn. A kayak good for that would spin around in the waves and be a bugger to paddle any distance. That said... Heritage "Redfish", one of theOcean Kayak "Prowler"s, or one of the Wilderness System "Tarpon"s. The can all be rigged with a rudder and are stable, dry, and a good platform for accessories.
Anyway, the "was" is because the house is going up for sale in March. We're headed to Florida sometime this spring. This time next year I'll be buying plane tickets to Cleveland to visit the folks, and asking somebody if I can borrow a pair of waders and fleece for the week. You can take the boy out of the steelhead but you can't take the steelhead out of the boy! |

Tough to get that spawn juice out from under the finger nails....
Good luck with the house sale, mines been a royal pain in the A$%...
Please post your address in Florida so I can crash the place when the snow gets too deep up here
A buddy of mine from Cleveland moved to Fort Myers last year and is loving life. Salt fish can rip it up like nothing else, you know that....
Have a good one!
