I'm considering a chest type vest and was wondering if anyone has an opinion on either the Wiliam Joseph Coastal or the Tulli chest style unit. I float and fly fish, and do a bit of pluging for saltwater fish as well, so the vest will see multiuse.

One thing I do not like about chest packs is most of them stick out to far for C-Pinning... Maybe try a Lumbar type pack which is what I use when I do not feel like wearing my vest. Just my insight on the situation.

Don't get the coastal by WJ. Nice vest, but as mentioned the two "hip/chest" packs on either side stick out WAY too far. Mine is almost brand new and I'm selling it. It doesn't fit very snugly either.

If you're not in need of large volumes of backpack space, I would highly reccomend the WJ Gear Bag Chest back however. Its lower profile and fits nicely right in the centre of your chest. My arm seems to tuck nicely into the side of it while pinning, and the design is simply unbeatable.

Never have seen the Coastal II in person, so I can't comment on it. Might be a nice comprimise between the gear bag chest and the coastal though.... The chest pack doesn't seem to have the pig-tails though, which is a bummer.

Cabela's chest pack is 39.95 and I love it. Light and comfortable with a ton of space for whatever you need. I fly fish and pin and all of my gear for both fits, I just take out what I'm not using that day and put it back for storage. 40 bucks, you can't beat it.

I own the coastal and I like it it doesnt seem to bother me when pinning but its all a matter of oppionion. The chest/pack that CB mentioned is nice I just bought one for my dad for fathers day if you decide on that and u have a Gander MTn near by get it from there its the exact same thing and ten dollars cheaper.

Another thing I would consider when buying a vest is its ability to resist water. I have a Columbia vest and at first it was water proof. But after extensive use, water seeps right through it. I've even sprayed it with water proofing spray. The next one I buy whether its a chest pack or vest will be completely waterproof.

Thanks for the all the advise. I still have not made a decision. I have neck and shoulder problems (pinched nerves) and find traditional vests really painfull to wear over a long period. I was in hopes that a chest style pack might take the weight off my shoulders and redistribute it to my hips and torso. I've tried a couple of different brands and don't seem to find the relief I intended to. The search goes on Smile

I got the Gander Mount pack and for 29.95 is a nice little chest pack you can fit a ton in it but you dont need to bring a ton of stuff.

On my second season with it and no complaints

I just got a fishpond shooting star..It was a treat for myself. Absolutly the best pack Ive ever used. VERY comfortable and lost of room, sits tight to the chest, and alot of features. The down side...the price tag...
179 bucks...OUCH...very nice though........

I was really looking at the Double Haul by Fishpond. It's the same chest pack but with a little smaller back pack. I have never seen one in person, thanks for the mini review. I figure if the pack limits the amount I carry I will be more kurt about what gear I'll carry, and the vest/pack should weigh less (better for the back). I tend to try to carry everything but the kitchen sink, and use only the same few items over and over again.

The Double Haul is a great pack - you won't be disappointed. Its big enough for a sweater or rain jacket in the back, or a lunch and water bottle. But not both. As long as you're not doing 12 hour hikes away from the car, you'll be fine. The front is similar to the Windwalker or Shooting Star (which I have). You don't want to be hauling around a lot of weight if you have neck/shoulder problems anyway. It is very adjustable an can be snugged right up, which you might like.

I had planned on the double haul myself, but after comparing the two side by side, I figured that the shooting star had a few nicer features and for the extra 50 bucks i mine as well go the whole nine...I dont temd to carry a lot of stuff(well maybe a lil' too much Smile

) but i did figure that a jacket and lunch would be a lil' tight in the double haul. As stated both packs are very nice.
