Hey Guys, I just picked up a JW Young Purist II
Have only fished it a handful of times, anyway.....
It says to oil it with sewing machine oil after every use............
Do you guys use any alternative oils that may work better?
And as far as care etc, it is pretty straight forward but any additional input would be appreciated.

Thanks in Advance

Ive got the same reel. Let me guess.....Dave at creekside, right? I love the reel.........ANYway, I would just get the sewing machine oil, and leave it at that.

I thought I'd get fancy, and dowse it in WD 40, but the problem is that it attracts dirt and grit. It took a long time to work it all out, clean it back up, etc.

Although the reel is a precision instrument, dont feel like you need to constantly dowse it in oil........precision instuments are built to be efficient with a sane dose of it.

Just clean it up with a q tip soaked in the oil, and leave well enough alone.....thats my 2 cents. The less I lube my reel and keep it clean (and NEVER dunk it in the water!!!!!!) the better. Get one of those nice big blue neoprene cases that you can slip over it when walking between spots. Worth its weight in gold.

MY friend has had his purist for 6 years and has never needed to take it apart and still spins great, IF you put just a tad too much oil it will spin like chit, too much oil = resistance. Too much oil when its really cold out means it will turn like a stuck wheel. My suggestion "If it aint broke dont fix it"

I have talked with Dave a few times, but picked it up elsewhere.
was really looking at the Bob james, but the reel being open and the dirt factor made sense.

Thanks for the input guys.
