E-mail Your Letters! The first letter is to Michael J. Weber, District Ranger at the USFS Mio Ranger Station. It is the Forest Service that issues the lease, and we only have untill June 30, 2003 to write in and have our opinions incorporated into the decision! Letter: Dear Mr. Weber, As I'm sure you're aware, the U.S. Forest Services Mio Ranger District has received a request by Savoy Energy, L.P. to construct and operate an exploratory gas and oil well on federal land adjacent to the border of the Mason Tract, in Crawford County, SE of Grayling (Sections 7 & 8, T25N, R1W). The exploratory well would be situated less than a half mile from the South Branch of the Au Sable River, and a mere 700' from the Mason Tract. The request does offer some minor provisions for reducing the well's impact on the environment, but it is clear that a well would permanently mar the pristine landscape, create excessive noise pollution, and put a world renowned river in serious jeopardy. While exploring for and extracting fuels are a modern day necessity, the possibility of surface or groundwater contamination is always a reality, and it's impacts fully accounted for. An accident at the drilling site or pipeline would not only destroy the fragile ecosystem, but the economy of the local communities that depend on the tourism this great resource generates. As a sportsman and outdoor enthusiast I am opposed to any drilling in this area. I urge you to weigh the well's potential benefits against its true cost to the environment and the families and businesses that depend on its health for their livelihood.
