Hanson Advantage Series Center Pin Float Reel; Owners Manual

|
I would like to share my story of inspiration and development of this reel.
After several years of fishing, I wanted to design my own float reel. The pro's and con's of many reels were discussed with friends on the river and in fishing shops across the Midwestern United States and Canada. These discussions changed the parameters of how I thought a float reel should be and lead to my own experimenting. By the third prototype, I knew I was on to something big! Everyone that tried it wanted one of their own and I did not have any to sell!

Before You Get Started Items Needed
|
- 50 yards of #20 backing
- Monofilament line that is small in diameter, easy to see and floats. Siglon Fluorescent pink monofilament line fulfills these requirements. A ten or twelve pound test line is a good line weight for Michigan fishing. Conditions with less current, spooky fish or shallow water may require lighter line.
- Your favorite rod
- Terminal tackle

Features of Your Hanson Center Pin Float Reel
|
- The knobs are tapered so the line will fall off on a bungled cast.
- The large holes (finger holes) in the spool allow for speed winding.
- The clicker is designed to stop the spool from spinning during transport.
- The clicker is NOT the drag.
- The lever is used to engage and disengage the clicker.
- The drag is angler supplied on the spool rim by either fingers or palming the spool.
- The reel foot is designed so one can easily side cast.
- The 7.8 ounce weight allows one to fish all day without fatigue
- The narrow reel width is comfortable for all sizes of hands.
- The reel is made of stainless steel and 6061-T6 aluminum with a hard coated anodized finish for durability in a marine environment.
- The light spool weight allows for very easy spool start up, allowing the reel to spin more easily, matching the variable currents in the river.
- The five-inch diameter creates a mechanical advantage over a smaller diameter spool, allowing easier star up of the spool spin.
- The lighter weight spool does not spin as long as others. However, lighter spools start/stop easier and faster while casting, with less inertia to keep it spinning. Additionally, and more importantly, it spins to fit the changing current speeds in every drift. This light spool weight is a perfect choice for fishing the very slow water of winter. A heavier spool cannot compensate for various current speeds.

How to Setup the Hanson Center Pin Float Reel to Make Your Fishing Experience More Enjoyable
Fastening Reel to Rod
Adjust the reel to line up the center of the lower guide with the center of the spool. The reel should then be securely fastened to the rod. The distance for reel placement is 10 to 12 inches from the rod butt. If your float rod is equipped with sliding rings to secure the reel, it is suggested you tape the reel/rings in place for added security.
Winding Backing to Reel
String the #20 backing through the guides toward the spool. Tie a loop using a uni-knot, then wrap the loop two times around the spool, pulling tightly so it does not slip. Cut off any excess tag (line). Wind the backing on the spool using lots of tension. As you wind, leave a 1/16 inch gap (no line) at the back of the spool. This gap will allow room for your next knot. Wind 50 yards. End your 50 yards at the bottom of the gap.
Attaching Fishing Line
Connect the monofilament and the backing with back-to-back uni-knots. Tuck knot into the gap. Carefully wind the monofilament under tension. Fill the spool with monofilament to the top of the holes. Your line is correctly spooled on your reel.
Finishing Steps
String your rod and attach your terminal tackle. Go fishing! Have Fun!

Care of Your Reel
|
- After each use, wipe the entire reel with a damp cloth and dry carefully. Store reel in the reel pouch provided.
- Do not immerse the reel in water.
- When transporting a rigged Rod and Reel, use the pouch to protect the reel from dirt and accidental damage.
- Handle with care. This is a precision-engineered instrument. A sharp blow can damage the precise alignment of the bearings.
- Harvey's Silicone High Temperature Grease should be sparingly placed on the shaft and clicker movements if needed. Use a Q-tip to apply.
- The bearings will take 3 to 4 days of fishing to "break in", after which, the reel will spin more freely.
- You may notice a slight sound as the spool spins. This is normal.
- The oval hole by the reel foot is a cleaning access hole. A shirt tail or any lint free cloth can be used to clean the spool edge. Another method to clean the spool is by sliding a corner of a piece of notebook paper between the spool and the back plate and then slide it around the spool. The dirt should be displaced with either method.
- Carry a hand towel in your boat or vest to keep your hands and reel clean while fishing. Be sure to keep the towel free of sand and other debris.
